Another research team comprises Prof. Yan Keyou (1st left), Prof. Xu Jianbin (2nd left) and doctoral tudents discovered nonstoichiometric acid–base reaction (NABR) as reliable synthetic route to highly stable CH3NH3PbI3 perovskite film for the production solar cells. The NABR perovskite film is stable for two months with negligible PbI2-impurity under 65% humidity, whereas other perovskites prepared by
traditional methods degrade distinctly after two weeks.The result was published in the November issue of Nature Communications.

A student body, Green World, has been organizing a 'Clean the Plate' campaign since March 2013. Tonnes of polypropylene pellets spilled into the sea by typhoon Vincente in July 2012. Prof. Pan Jiayi at the Institute of Space and Earth Information Science made use of a newly developed marine environment system to assist the clean-up operation.
CUHK students organized several trips to beaches to remove the polypropylene pellets that spilled into the sea and were washed up onto beaches after typhoon Vicente hit Hong Kong in July 2012.

Four Year 1 students from the Department of Mechanical and Automation Engineering, designed a refuse sorting device using a sound detection system, and won the championship in the First Greater China Design Competition.
A genetic engineering team formed by undergraduate students of science and engineering at CUHK won a gold medal at the iGEM (International Genetic Engineered Machine) Asia Regional Jamboree in October 2011 with their project of making use of halorhodopsin, a light-driven ion pump that can be found in halobacteria, to make BioBrick parts that can be used to produce electricity and desalinate seawater.

Leadership Development Programme<br><br>Guo Songtao, the first Chinese ambassador to Britain in late-Qing China, must be one of the earliest Chinese visitors to the Royal Observatory Greenwich. He visited the observatory on 3 July 1877 and wrote down what he saw in his journal. This year, a group of CUHK students set foot in the same place. Although China has changed from what it was 134 years ago, these students still have something to learn from the UK.
A group of students from S.H. Ho College went with the Vice-Chancellor to Wototo, Uganda, for a service tour in July 2011. They rendered much needed help to orphaned children and deprived women there, and were greatly impressed by the friendliness and the aspiration of the people they served.

The Department of Surgery at CUHK performed the first two cases of robotic-assisted endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) for the treatment of early gastric neoplasia in Hong Kong. This complex endoscopic surgery involved the use of newly designed robotic arms attached to the ordinary endoscope.
Prof. Wong Kam-bo (right) of the Centre for Protein Science and Crystallography, the School of Life Sciences, discovered how Helicobacter pylori, a bacterium causes peptic ulcers and stomach cancer, has managed to survive in the acidic environment of the human gut. His research paper has been selected as ‘Paper of the Week’ in the Journal of Biological Chemistry.
Prof. Ho Pui-yin from the Department of History receives the Chevalier dans l'Ordre des Palmes académiques (Knighthood in the Order of Academic Palms) from Mr. A. Barthélémy, Consul-General of France in Hong Kong and Macau, for her contribution in higher education.
Chan Kin-pong, a psychology student who had received the HSBC Overseas Scholarship 2009/10, initiated the 'Little Dream-lighters' programme to provide English language classes to underprivileged children.
Past colleagues and students mourned Prof. Baysung Hsu, Emeritus Professor of Physics and former Pro-Vice-Chancellor, who passed away in April 2011. Professor Hsu was greatly respected for his contribution to the development of the CUHK during its early years.
In December 2010 Prof. Dennis Lo published his groundbreaking research that by analyzing a blood sample of the mother the entire genome of the fetus can be deduced and screened for possible diseases. Professor Lo was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in May 2011.
Prof. Bei Dao, Professor of Humanities, received a string of honours: Korea's First Changwon K. C. International Literary Prize for Poetry; top contemporary Chinese poet; honorary Doctor of Letters by Brown University.

Prof. Lee Siu-nam Paul has been appointed as Dean of  Social Science for a period of five years from 1 August 2009. Prof. Lee is a CUHK veteran, having done some of his degrees and the best part of his teaching and research career here. For the future development of his Faculty, Prof. Lee sees the need for emphasis to be assigned to research, teaching, as well as community service.
Prof. D.C. Lau (1921-2010), Emeritus Professor of Chinese, is a figure not only greatly respected for his immense scholarship, but also fondly remembered for his gentlemanly manners. Apart from his grand tomes on philosophy, D.C. Lau also wins the gratitude of thousands for his excellent translation of the <b>Tao Te Ching</b>.
2009 marked the 25th anniversary of CUHK's English Language Teaching Unit, part of our commitment to the bilingual and multicultural dimensions of student education.
Prof. Edward Ng Yan-yung (right) started the Wu Zhiqiao project to help building safe passages in rural areas in China. Today the project has benefited thousands of commuting students in far-off places. Prof. Ng received the Hong Kong Humanity Award in May 2010.

In November 2010, a team of Biochemistry students struck gold at MIT, where they won the championship in an international competition with a project proving the capacity of bacteria DNA as a device for information storage.
The soya bean is native to China, but having been grown in other lands for many years it has lost some of its genetic robustness. The <b>Homecoming of Soybeans</b> project aims at restoring the crop’s stress tolerance and enabling it to be grown in more parts of China. It is a time-honoured tradition at Chung Chi that the College anniversary festivities should be concluded with a singing contest, but it is rare that the singing features the Vice-Chancellor! CUHK law students made wonderful achievements at the Jessup Moot, widely held to be the most important student moot competition in the world. The CUHK team represented Hong Kong at the event in Washington DC in June 2010 and won the much coveted Hardy C. Dillard Award for writing the best memorials.

Mr. Philip Chen, former Deputy Chairman of Cathay Pacific Airways, was on campus in April 2010 to share with staff and students in the BBA programme his insightful observations on CX marketing strategies and related issues in a session in the 'Heart to Heart' series involving policy-makers in high commerce.
Long Service Award Ceremonies are always moving occasions, especially when you see people recognized for 35 years in the service of the University. The 2009 ceremony was held in April and the Vice-Chancellor was present to give away souvenirs to 14 colleagues who had served for 35 years, and 51 for 25 years of service.
Prof. Condoleezza Rice, Secretary of State under the George W. Bush administration, came to campus and gave a public lecture in March 2010. The lecture, on the Future of Asia, attracted an immense audience comprising senior government officials, academics, and students.

The Vice-Chancellor presented awards for Exemplary Service to eight members of staff in January 2010. The presentation ceremony was attended by some 160 guests including the families and friends of the recipients, their colleagues, and also senior academics and administrators of the University.
Shaw College celebrated its 24th Founder's Day in January 2010, with an assembly at its Letcure Theatre and speeches and prize presentation. Prof. Arthur Li (5th left), former Vice-Chancellor, was the guest of honour.
Turbulence has important bearing on weather, oceanic circulation and geomagnetic disasters. Prof. Xia Keqing of the Physics Department is at the forefront of research on the subject, and for his outstanding contribution he was presented with the 2009 State Natural Science Award (second class) by the State Council.

The Lion Dance is always the best at New Asia College, and a lively performance of this traditional demonstration of skills and strength is an essential part of the annual anniversary celebrations.
Sometimes an internship did not end where and when the job was. Phoebe Wan, who served in an NGO in Singapore during the summer of 2010, was invited to attend an international conference in Tokyo as a member of the NGO’s team in November, submitted a paper on behalf of the NGO, and the paper made it to the finals as one of the best presented at the Conference!
Prof. Benjamin Wah, the first Provost of the University, is poised to open the door to many innovations. Prof. Wah, Wei Lun Professor of Computer Science and Engineering, is the principal academic officer of the University and will be at the vanguard of research and curricular development at CUHK.
Prof. Wong Ching-ping, the new Dean of Engineering, took up his duties in early 2010. Prof. Wong is an expert in electronic and material engineering. A native of Hong Kong, he looks forward to playing a significant part in the development of his home city, the PRD, and China at large.
In the fifth round of UGC's Areas of Excellence scheme, two CUHK research projects netted a total of $103 million in grants. Of this, $80 million will go to the Institute of Network Coding, where Prof. Raymond Yeung (left) and his colleagues research on telecommunications, information security, and bioinformatics.
Under UGC's Areas of Excellence grant scheme, Prof. David Faure and his colleagues broke all records by obtaining an allocation of $23 million for the project on the Historical Anthropology of Chinese Society, the first such grant ever awarded to a project in the humanities.
The other recipient of the 2009 Ministry of Education Higher Education Outstanding Scientific Research Output Award is Prof. Helen Meng of the Department of Systems Engineering and Engineering Management. She saw the award as encouragement to further work on multimodal human-computer interaction.
In 2010, the Rhodes Scholarship for Hong Kong was offered to a medical graduate of CUHK, Timothy Cheng. His interests outside medical studies include literature, film, and sports, and his commiseration for human sufferings has been manifested in his voluntary services in Inner Mongolia, Kenya, and Yunnan.
Phoebus Lee, a doctoral Music student, walked away with the championship at the New Generation 2010 competition jointly organized by the Hong Kong Composers' Guild and RTHK Radio 4. Mr. Lee's entry, a work titled <b>Arid Branches Resound</b>, came first among the nine selected for the final round of the competition.
Lui Hoi-lam, an anthropology freshman, participated in the New Asia-Yale community service exchange programme in the summer of 2010 and spent a week in a homeless women shelter in the US, giving daycare services. She relishes her experience and misses the children under her care.

The 67th Degree Congregation took place in December 2009 with the Chief Executive of the Hong Kong SAR presiding as Chancellor of the University. A total of 7,139 degrees were handed out during the event, and Dr. Song Jian, the Honourable Henry Tang and Prof. Roger Tsien were admitted into doctorates <b>honoris causa</b>.

Nurses are trained to be brisk walkers, but few come close to her in terms of being light-footed. Miss Yu Kit-ching (2nd right), a Year 3 Nursing Student, won the woman's individual championship for the second year running in the Annual Cross Country Meet of the University Sports Federation of Hong Kong.
The 53rd anniversary celebrations of United College took place in October 2009 with all the trimmings, including the Feast for the Thousand and the cake-cutting routine.
In October 2009,  21 students of Shaw College went to Cambodia to administer much needed help to impoverished communities there. At about the same time, the Head of College led another team of 20 students to Beichuan County and offered support and assistance in restoring the confidence and optimism of the residents.
Prof. Robert Mundell, Nobel Laureate in Economics 1999, is known throughout the world as the 'Father of the Euro'. He took up a Distinguished Professorship-at-Large in 2009. Prof. Mundell is also a man of many parts, and his interests extended from painting to the restoration of medieval castles.
Prof. Ng Cheuk-yiu was installed as the Dean of Science in September 2009. An alumnus himself, Prof. Ng had a long and distinguished research career, having sat at the feet of Prof. Y.T. Lee, the Nobel Laureate. Prof. Ng advises young people to identify their passions and be devoted to their ideals.

Prof. Charlie Wang (right) was recently presented with the CIE Young Engineer Award 2009 by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, for outstanding contribution to the application of computers in engineering. The award is available only to scientists under 35 years of age.
Possibly a modern continuation of the <b>Coppelia</b> story, the CUHK MoE-Microsoft Key Laboratory of Human-Centric Computing and Interface Technologies was granted national recognition status and put under Ministry of Education management at a ceremony held in August 2010.
