CUHK Receives Four Outstanding Scientific Research Output Awards<br><br>CUHK receives four Higher Education Outstanding Scientific Research Output Awards (Science and Technology) from the Ministry of Education in 2012. The award presentation ceremony was held on16 May at the Lecture Theatre of Shaw College. CUHK and the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) signed an agreement which enables CUHK students to participate in the CERN Summer Student Programme. Tam Chun-nam and Li Tsun-yin were given this rare opportunity in the summer of 2012.

The CUHK-PWH Lee Quo Wei Cardiovascular Intervention Centre officially opened on 2 April 2012, the only one in Hong Kong performing renal sympathetic denervation, left atrial appendage (LAA) occluder and cardiac contractility modulation (CCM) implantation in public setting.

Prof. Dennis Lo Yuk-ming, Li Ka Shing Professor of Medicine, received the AACC-NACB Award for Outstanding Contributions to Clinical Chemistry in a Selected Area of Research. He is the first ever Chinese to receive the honour.
The Department of Surgery at CUHK performed the first two cases of robotic-assisted endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) for the treatment of early gastric neoplasia in Hong Kong. This complex endoscopic surgery involved the use of newly designed robotic arms attached to the ordinary endoscope.

In the fifth round of UGC's Areas of Excellence scheme, two CUHK research projects netted a total of $103 million in grants. Of this, $80 million will go to the Institute of Network Coding, where Prof. Raymond Yeung (left) and his colleagues research on telecommunications, information security, and bioinformatics.
The other recipient of the 2009 Ministry of Education Higher Education Outstanding Scientific Research Output Award is Prof. Helen Meng of the Department of Systems Engineering and Engineering Management. She saw the award as encouragement to further work on multimodal human-computer interaction.
Possibly a modern continuation of the <b>Coppelia</b> story, the CUHK MoE-Microsoft Key Laboratory of Human-Centric Computing and Interface Technologies was granted national recognition status and put under Ministry of Education management at a ceremony held in August 2010.
