The Institute of Space and Earth Information Science has received a donation of RMB 1 million from the China Soong Ching Ling Foundation for establishing a book gallery, organizing conferences and setting up scholarships.
The new findings of the research team led by Prof. Fung Ming-Chiu from the School of Life Sciences reveal that normal cells can reverse apoptosis as cancer cells do. And reversal of apoptosis may cause normal cells to become carcinogenic.

Prof. Dennis Lo Yuk-ming, Li Ka Shing Professor of Medicine, received the AACC-NACB Award for Outstanding Contributions to Clinical Chemistry in a Selected Area of Research. He is the first ever Chinese to receive the honour.

The Department of Surgery at CUHK performed the first two cases of robotic-assisted endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) for the treatment of early gastric neoplasia in Hong Kong. This complex endoscopic surgery involved the use of newly designed robotic arms attached to the ordinary endoscope.

In December 2010 Prof. Dennis Lo published his groundbreaking research that by analyzing a blood sample of the mother the entire genome of the fetus can be deduced and screened for possible diseases. Professor Lo was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in May 2011.

Miss Tan Lu, a doctoral student at CUHK, won the accolade of being the Best Young Author with a paper presented at the Asian Conference on Remote Sensing in Hanoi in November 2010.
The soya bean is native to China, but having been grown in other lands for many years it has lost some of its genetic robustness. The <b>Homecoming of Soybeans</b> project aims at restoring the crop’s stress tolerance and enabling it to be grown in more parts of China. Prof. Yau Shing-tung (4th right), Distinguished Professor-at-Large of CUHK, has recently added yet another rare star to his academic firmament. Already a Fields Medallist, Prof. Yau was presented with the 2010 Wolf Prize in Mathematics, making him the only person of Chinese ethnicity to date who holds both honours.
Prof. Christopher Cheng of the School of Biomedical Sciences was honoured with a State Natural Science Award (second class) for his research on Chinese medicinal herbs. He attributed his success to collaborative work with research institutions of high repute on the mainland.

Turbulence has important bearing on weather, oceanic circulation and geomagnetic disasters. Prof. Xia Keqing of the Physics Department is at the forefront of research on the subject, and for his outstanding contribution he was presented with the 2009 State Natural Science Award (second class) by the State Council.
In the fifth round of UGC's Areas of Excellence scheme, two CUHK research projects netted a total of $103 million in grants. Of this, $80 million will go to the Institute of Network Coding, where Prof. Raymond Yeung (left) and his colleagues research on telecommunications, information security, and bioinformatics.

Staff Honoured for Exemplary Service
Nine members of the University were presented the Exemplary Service Award 2007–08 by Prof. Lawrence J. Lau (6th left), Vice-Chancellor, on 6 February 2009 at the Esther Lee Building.
Prof. Charlie Wang (right) was recently presented with the CIE Young Engineer Award 2009 by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, for outstanding contribution to the application of computers in engineering. The award is available only to scientists under 35 years of age.
Possibly a modern continuation of the <b>Coppelia</b> story, the CUHK MoE-Microsoft Key Laboratory of Human-Centric Computing and Interface Technologies was granted national recognition status and put under Ministry of Education management at a ceremony held in August 2010.
