CUHK Receives Four Outstanding Scientific Research Output Awards<br><br>CUHK receives four Higher Education Outstanding Scientific Research Output Awards (Science and Technology) from the Ministry of Education in 2012. The award presentation ceremony was held on16 May at the Lecture Theatre of Shaw College. Dr. Du Zhanyuan <em>(left)</em>, Vice-Minister of Education, presented the award certificates to Prof. Benjamin W. Wah, Provost, CUHK.
Led by coaches Prof. Michael Ramsden (seated) and Mr. Newton Mak (back), four law students won the championship and the LAWASIA Trophy for Best Memorial at the 7th LAWASIA International Moot Competition.

Prof. Daniele Perissin of the Institute of Space and Earth Information Science received the Dragon Programme award from the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Ministry of Science and Technology of China (MOST) for his contribution to the success of their cooperation programme on space remote sensing.
The Chinese University received six Higher Education Outstanding Scientific Research Output Awards (Science and Technology) from the Ministry of Education in 2011, including three first-class awards in natural sciences, two first-class awards and one second-class award in technology advancement.
Four Year 1 students from the Department of Mechanical and Automation Engineering, designed a refuse sorting device using a sound detection system, and won the championship in the First Greater China Design Competition.
A genetic engineering team formed by undergraduate students of science and engineering at CUHK won a gold medal at the iGEM (International Genetic Engineered Machine) Asia Regional Jamboree in October 2011 with their project of making use of halorhodopsin, a light-driven ion pump that can be found in halobacteria, to make BioBrick parts that can be used to produce electricity and desalinate seawater.
Yasmine Zahir (Law, Year 4), a French minor in the Department of Linguistics and Modern Languages, won the French Speech Competition held on 25 February 2012.
Two teams comprising six students of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering snatched both the championship and the second runner-up position in the IBM Inter-University Programming Contest 2012 on 11 February 2012.
The Village Rebuild Demonstration Project in Maan Qiao Village of Sichuan was awarded the Jury Commendation for Innovation in 2011, UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Awards for Culture Heritage Conservation.
Dr. Colin Storey, University Librarian, was awarded the 2011 Hong Kong Library Association lifetime Honorary Fellowship on 9 December 2011.

CUHK Students Sweep the 12th Challenge Cup
CUHK's team won the Hong Kong and Macau Cup in the 12th Challenge Cup for the fifth time.
Dr. Chen Fulong, research associate of the Institute of Space and Earth Information Science, won the ShunjiMurai Award—the Best Paper Award of the annual conference of Asian Association on Remote Sensing.
With excellent performance in international woodball championships, Ng Cho-kwan, Year 3 student in Sports Science and Physical Education, was named the world's top in 2011.
Prof. Dennis Lo Yuk-ming, Li Ka Shing Professor of Medicine, received the AACC-NACB Award for Outstanding Contributions to Clinical Chemistry in a Selected Area of Research. He is the first ever Chinese to receive the honour.
Three academics were made Senior Research Fellows by the prestigious Croucher Foundation in March 2011 for their respective achievements in computer science and medical research.
Three research projects were honoured with the Higher Education Outstanding Scientific Research Output Awards of the Ministry of Education in March 2011. The awards were presented on campus by the Ministry's special envoy and the recipients are seen here beaming with their trophies.
Miss Yiu Kit-ching, the famous running nurse at CUHK, added another jewel to her diadem by winning the Women's Overall Championship at the Standard Chartered Marathon 2011 in February.

Prof. Ho Pui-yin from the Department of History receives the Chevalier dans l'Ordre des Palmes académiques (Knighthood in the Order of Academic Palms) from Mr. A. Barthélémy, Consul-General of France in Hong Kong and Macau, for her contribution in higher education.
In December 2010 Prof. Dennis Lo published his groundbreaking research that by analyzing a blood sample of the mother the entire genome of the fetus can be deduced and screened for possible diseases. Professor Lo was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in May 2011.
Prof. Rossa Chiu of the Department of Chemical Pathology won the 2011 Young Investigator's Award of the International Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine and the same year's Professors' Prize of the Association of Academic Heads of Clinical Biochemistry Departments in the UK.
Five CUHK students won prizes at the New World Mathematics Awards Presentation Ceremony in December 2010 for outstanding achievements in their undergraduate or postgraduate studies.
For the third year running, a team of Business Administration students won the prestigious HSBC University Management Challenge in November 2010 by proposing the best banking model for the Generation Y.
Miss Tan Lu, a doctoral student at CUHK, won the accolade of being the Best Young Author with a paper presented at the Asian Conference on Remote Sensing in Hanoi in November 2010.
In November 2010, a team of Biochemistry students struck gold at MIT, where they won the championship in an international competition with a project proving the capacity of bacteria DNA as a device for information storage.
The CUHK Women's Team was the first runner-up in an intervarsity aquatic meet in October 2010.
CUHK law students made wonderful achievements at the Jessup Moot, widely held to be the most important student moot competition in the world. The CUHK team represented Hong Kong at the event in Washington DC in June 2010 and won the much coveted Hardy C. Dillard Award for writing the best memorials.
CUHK received the Gold award in the Public Organizations and Utilities sector at the 2009 HK Awards for Environmental Excellence, the highest accolade for ecologically-minded efforts among public bodies in Hong Kong.
Prof. Yau Shing-tung (4th right), Distinguished Professor-at-Large of CUHK, has recently added yet another rare star to his academic firmament. Already a Fields Medallist, Prof. Yau was presented with the 2010 Wolf Prize in Mathematics, making him the only person of Chinese ethnicity to date who holds both honours.
Long Service Award Ceremonies are always moving occasions, especially when you see people recognized for 35 years in the service of the University. The 2009 ceremony was held in April and the Vice-Chancellor was present to give away souvenirs to 14 colleagues who had served for 35 years, and 51 for 25 years of service.
Prof. Christopher Cheng of the School of Biomedical Sciences was honoured with a State Natural Science Award (second class) for his research on Chinese medicinal herbs. He attributed his success to collaborative work with research institutions of high repute on the mainland.

The Vice-Chancellor presented awards for Exemplary Service to eight members of staff in January 2010. The presentation ceremony was attended by some 160 guests including the families and friends of the recipients, their colleagues, and also senior academics and administrators of the University.
Turbulence has important bearing on weather, oceanic circulation and geomagnetic disasters. Prof. Xia Keqing of the Physics Department is at the forefront of research on the subject, and for his outstanding contribution he was presented with the 2009 State Natural Science Award (second class) by the State Council.
The Global Learning Opportunities in Business Education programme won an award in January 2011 from the IIE, an international organization for the promotion of educational activities across country boundaries.
Professor Kao wins the 2009 Nobel Prize in Physics
Nurses are trained to be brisk walkers, but few come close to her in terms of being light-footed. Miss Yu Kit-ching (2nd right), a Year 3 Nursing Student, won the woman's individual championship for the second year running in the Annual Cross Country Meet of the University Sports Federation of Hong Kong.
Prof. Lin Hui (3rd right) was in Beijing to receive an Outstanding Contribution Prize from the Asian Association on Remote Sensing in recognition of his work in the development of remote sensing theories and application in various scientific areas.
Staff Honoured for Exemplary Service
Nine members of the University were presented the Exemplary Service Award 2007–08 by Prof. Lawrence J. Lau (6th left), Vice-Chancellor, on 6 February 2009 at the Esther Lee Building.
Prof. Charlie Wang (right) was recently presented with the CIE Young Engineer Award 2009 by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, for outstanding contribution to the application of computers in engineering. The award is available only to scientists under 35 years of age.
