Prof. Rossa W.K. Chiu, Department of Chemical Pathology, was awarded the 2012 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Science Prize for Innovation, Research and Education; and the Chinese Young Women in Science Fellowship.
The new findings of the research team led by Prof. Fung Ming-Chiu from the School of Life Sciences reveal that normal cells can reverse apoptosis as cancer cells do. And reversal of apoptosis may cause normal cells to become carcinogenic.
The Department of Surgery at CUHK performed the first two cases of robotic-assisted endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) for the treatment of early gastric neoplasia in Hong Kong. This complex endoscopic surgery involved the use of newly designed robotic arms attached to the ordinary endoscope.
Prof. Wong Kam-bo (right) of the Centre for Protein Science and Crystallography, the School of Life Sciences, discovered how Helicobacter pylori, a bacterium causes peptic ulcers and stomach cancer, has managed to survive in the acidic environment of the human gut. His research paper has been selected as ‘Paper of the Week’ in the Journal of Biological Chemistry.
Prof. Xia Keqing was elected a Fellow of the American Physical Society in December 2010 for outstanding research in fluid turbulences and in other branches of Physics.
