The aims of CU x Rubbish are to encourage the campus community to segregate rubbish and recycle; to engage in free cycling and upcycling; and to reduce consumption or buy less.

CUHK has the largest fleet of eco vehicles among local universities—a total of 28 electric scooters (40 by the end of 2014), complete with a solar charging station, two electric vans and two electric buses.

The committee members of the organization distribute food and beverage coupons to reward students who have finished all their food and to encourage those who haven't to do so, in the hope that the financial incentive will serve as tinder for long-term behavioural change.

CUHK students organized several trips to beaches to remove the polypropylene pellets that spilled into the sea and were washed up onto beaches after typhoon Vicente hit Hong Kong in July 2012.

CUHK launched its 'Green Office Programme' (GO!) on 11 May 2012. The programme encourages University members to participate and commit to some common, simple, effective and achievable green practices such as saving electricity and recycling materials.

In May, the Central University in Taiwan, Nanjing University and CUHK formed a Cross-Strait Green University Consortium to promote the green message through joint programmes and collaborative activities.

The Institute of Environment, Energy and Sustainability was established on 22 October 2011 to integrate and consolidate CUHK's strengths and endeavours in environmental research and education programmes.

The Yard for Environmental Sustainability (YES) encourages reuse and recycling of old books, banners, clothes, accessories, CDs, toys, gifts, electrical and electronic appliances, cans, metal boxes, and glass bottles etc.

The Environmental Sustainability Ambassador Programme was launched in November 2010 to promote ecological concepts not only through publicity, but also through the examples set by the ambassadors themselves.

An exhibition highlighting the large number of species found on the CUHK campus and how they might be appreciated from both scientific and aesthetic angles was opened by the Secretary for the Environment in October 2010.

CUHK received the Gold award in the Public Organizations and Utilities sector at the 2009 HK Awards for Environmental Excellence, the highest accolade for ecologically-minded efforts among public bodies in Hong Kong.
