The CUHK team, formed by (from left) , spent two months preparing for the competition with support and guidance from Prof. Wilson
Wong, Programme Director of MPUP, and Prof. May Chu, Assistant Programme Director of MPUP. The
day-long competition was divided into rounds of simulation games. Each team represented a country
making policy decisions and was required to collaborate strategically with the other teams within limited
time to achieve ‘win-win’ outcomes

The new findings of the research team led by Prof. Fung Ming-Chiu from the School of Life Sciences reveal that normal cells can reverse apoptosis as cancer cells do. And reversal of apoptosis may cause normal cells to become carcinogenic.
A genetic engineering team formed by undergraduate students of science and engineering at CUHK won a gold medal at the iGEM (International Genetic Engineered Machine) Asia Regional Jamboree in October 2011 with their project of making use of halorhodopsin, a light-driven ion pump that can be found in halobacteria, to make BioBrick parts that can be used to produce electricity and desalinate seawater.
Prof. Kwan Hoi-shan, director of the Food Research Centre, developed a platform and database for the DNA-based species authentication of common dried seafood and tonic food products. The platform will enable the industry to monitor and verify the origins and species of these products.
CUHK Scientists Reveal Genetic Link between Dissimilar Forms of Animals

Prof. Chu Ka-hou (left) and Dr. Tsang Ling-ming show the dramatic difference in size between king crabs and hermit crabs.
A recipient of many teaching awards, Prof. Poon Wai-yin, Associate Dean (Education) of the Faculty of Science and Professor in the Department of Statistics, won another accolade when she was conferred the inaugural UGC Award for Teaching Excellence by the University Grants Committee.
Prof. Wong Kam-bo (right) of the Centre for Protein Science and Crystallography, the School of Life Sciences, discovered how Helicobacter pylori, a bacterium causes peptic ulcers and stomach cancer, has managed to survive in the acidic environment of the human gut. His research paper has been selected as ‘Paper of the Week’ in the Journal of Biological Chemistry.
Prof. Liu Renbao and his team recently made it to the cover of a prestigious journal on nanotechnology in April 2011 with their pioneering research.
Prof. Xiao Xudong (left) and Prof. Li Quan of the Physics Department developed low cost, high efficiency, thin film solar cells.
Five CUHK students won prizes at the New World Mathematics Awards Presentation Ceremony in December 2010 for outstanding achievements in their undergraduate or postgraduate studies.
Prof. Xia Keqing was elected a Fellow of the American Physical Society in December 2010 for outstanding research in fluid turbulences and in other branches of Physics.
In November 2010, a team of Biochemistry students struck gold at MIT, where they won the championship in an international competition with a project proving the capacity of bacteria DNA as a device for information storage.
The soya bean is native to China, but having been grown in other lands for many years it has lost some of its genetic robustness. The Homecoming of Soybeans project aims at restoring the crop’s stress tolerance and enabling it to be grown in more parts of China. Prof. Samuel Sun (left) and Prof. Lam Hon-ming are at the helm of this meaningful project.
Turbulence has important bearing on weather, oceanic circulation and geomagnetic disasters. Prof. Xia Keqing of the Physics Department is at the forefront of research on the subject, and for his outstanding contribution he was presented with the 2009 State Natural Science Award (second class) by the State Council.
Prof. Ng Cheuk-yiu was installed as the Dean of Science in September 2009. An alumnus himself, Prof. Ng had a long and distinguished research career, having sat at the feet of Prof. Y.T. Lee, the Nobel Laureate. Prof. Ng advises young people to identify their passions and be devoted to their ideals.
Hu Shiu-ying, Honorary Professor of Chinese Medicine, and Senior Research Fellow (honorary), School of Life Sciences, passed away on 22 May 2012. A great authority on botany, Professor Hu joined the Department of Biology (currently the School of Life Sciences) at CUHK as a senior lecturer in 1968.
