Another research team comprises Prof. Yan Keyou (1st left), Prof. Xu Jianbin (2nd left) and doctoral tudents discovered nonstoichiometric acid–base reaction (NABR) as reliable synthetic route to highly stable CH3NH3PbI3 perovskite film for the production solar cells. The NABR perovskite film is stable for two months with negligible PbI2-impurity under 65% humidity, whereas other perovskites prepared by
traditional methods degrade distinctly after two weeks.The result was published in the November issue of Nature Communications.

Thirty-six girls entering Secondary 3 from schools in Hong Kong, Macau and Guangzhou took part in the Exploring Interest in Technology and Engineering Camp co-organized by the Faculty of Engineering and IBM China/Hong Kong Limited from 22 to 26 July 2012.
To address security problems arising from the use of mobile devices, Prof. Lee Pak-ching, Patrick, assistant professor, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, has developed three innovative technologies for mobile cloud computing with many advantages, including encryption, safety, high speed, economy and reliability.
Four Year 1 students from the Department of Mechanical and Automation Engineering, designed a refuse sorting device using a sound detection system, and won the championship in the First Greater China Design Competition.
A genetic engineering team formed by undergraduate students of science and engineering at CUHK won a gold medal at the iGEM (International Genetic Engineered Machine) Asia Regional Jamboree in October 2011 with their project of making use of halorhodopsin, a light-driven ion pump that can be found in halobacteria, to make BioBrick parts that can be used to produce electricity and desalinate seawater.
Two teams comprising six students of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering snatched both the championship and the second runner-up position in the IBM Inter-University Programming Contest 2012 on 11 February 2012.
Chen Chih-fan, honorary professor of the Department of Electronic Engineering, passed away on 25 February 2012. Trained as an electronic engineer, he was an inspiring essayist known for his elegantly simple writing style.
Prof. Jia Jiaya of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering and his post-doctoral fellow Dr. Xu Li have developed a new Robust Motion Deblurring technology to fix blurry photos.
In celebration of its 20th anniversary, the Faculty of Engineering showcased in the Innovation and Technology Fair a wide spectrum of new innovative research projects in engineering and information technology conducted by its faculty members and students.
Three academics were made Senior Research Fellows by the prestigious Croucher Foundation in March 2011 for their respective achievements in computer science and medical research.
In February 2011, three CUHK professors in Engineering were elected to IEEE Fellowships while one obtained a much coveted prize.

The Electronic Engineering Department celebrated its 40th anniversary in December 2010. Seen in the picture is Dr. York Liao, currently Chairman of the HKCAAVQ and one of the faculty members of the Department in its early days.
Prof. Wong Ching-ping, the new Dean of Engineering, took up his duties in early 2010. Prof. Wong is an expert in electronic and material engineering. A native of Hong Kong, he looks forward to playing a significant part in the development of his home city, the PRD, and China at large.
The other recipient of the 2009 Ministry of Education Higher Education Outstanding Scientific Research Output Award is Prof. Helen Meng of the Department of Systems Engineering and Engineering Management. She saw the award as encouragement to further work on multimodal human-computer interaction.
Prof. Charlie Wang (right) was recently presented with the CIE Young Engineer Award 2009 by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, for outstanding contribution to the application of computers in engineering. The award is available only to scientists under 35 years of age.
