A student body, Green World, has been organizing a 'Clean the Plate' campaign since March 2013. The Association of Commonwealth Universities Conference of Executive Heads 2011 was held in Hong Kong from 6 to 8 April. On 7 April, participants from 22 countries came to CUHK for a day's conference.
On 24 March 2011, members of the University held a solemn vigil for those who suffered in the earthquake and tsunami that struck northeastern Japan. Both the Vice-Chancellor and the Consul-General of Japan were present to share the grief and the prayers of those who attended.

Prof. Jean Woo is in charge of the Cadenza Hub, a Jockey Club-supported but self-financing facility for seniors with chronic illnesses in Tai Po. It offers multi-disciplinary services in terms of treatment, assessment and management to elders in a relaxed and well appointed environment resembling a club.
The Finance Trading Laboratory was opened by the Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury in November 2010. The laboratory would provide practical training on the art of trading vis-à-vis real market fluctuations, and on the spot decision-making.
As if it was an early sign of the shape of things to come, Dr. the Honourable Leung Chun-ying spoke on the responsibilities of political leaders at a Shaw College assembly in November 2010.

It is a time-honoured tradition at Chung Chi that the College anniversary festivities should be concluded with a singing contest, but it is rare that the singing features the Vice-Chancellor! This happened in October when the stage was graced by the presence of the Vice-Chancellor and the College Head.
United College observed its 54th anniversary with a high degree of solemnity, but we know that much fun occurred outside the hall, with a campus run, the cutting and sharing of the College's birthday cake and a dinner for the thousand in the evening.

The CUHK Men's Rowing Team won the Universities Rowing Championship for the ninth consecutive year in August 2010.
With the assistance of a team from the School of Architecture, a seismic-proof study hall was built in Sichuan to enable young students victimized by the earthquake a few years ago to go back to school in relative safety.
The Institute of Global Economics and Finance was inaugurated in early 2010 as a research and training entity with economists and financiers of the first order among its members. It was set up to provide conceptual and policy input in the context of China's emergence as one of the world's fastest-growing economies.
The Tsinghua-MIT-CUHK Research Centre for Theoretical Computer Science was inaugurated in June 2010 to pool world-class resources of these 3 institutions to lead international research in the field.

The Ven. Master Hsing Yun, a major figure in contemporary Buddhism with influence throughout the world, was on campus in April 2010 to speak to staff, students and members of the public on <b>Chan (Zen) and Enlightenment</b>. The Master's wisdom, often clothed in well-natured humour, was very well received by those who attended.
Long Service Award Ceremonies are always moving occasions, especially when you see people recognized for 35 years in the service of the University. The 2009 ceremony was held in April and the Vice-Chancellor was present to give away souvenirs to 14 colleagues who had served for 35 years, and 51 for 25 years of service.
The 25th anniversary of the MA in Translation Programme was celebrated with a seminar on <b>Chinese Literature in English Translation</b>, jointly sponsored by the relevant departments at CUHK and Oxford University, and with the participation of some of the best universities in the world where the subject is studied.
Prof. Condoleezza Rice, Secretary of State under the George W. Bush administration, came to campus and gave a public lecture in March 2010. The lecture, on the Future of Asia, attracted an immense audience comprising senior government officials, academics, and students.

A walkathon led by Prof. and Mrs. Charles Kao, the Council Chairman, the Vice-Chancellor and ex-VCs Prof. Ma Lin and Prof. Ambrose King, took place on campus in March 2010, drawing 3,000 walkers from staff, students, alumni and friends. The event raised HK$3,000,000 for the Charles Kao scholarship endowment fund.

Walk for Health! The Walking Campaign has become a fixture on the University calendar. Its fourth phase took place in January 2010 and, despite the cold, attracted over a thousand staff members and students.
The Vice-Chancellor presented awards for Exemplary Service to eight members of staff in January 2010. The presentation ceremony was attended by some 160 guests including the families and friends of the recipients, their colleagues, and also senior academics and administrators of the University.

The Lion Dance is always the best at New Asia College, and a lively performance of this traditional demonstration of skills and strength is an essential part of the annual anniversary celebrations.
Horace grants as much liberty to the painter as to the poet by saying that they have always had an equal right to dare to do whatever they wanted. Hence the presence of a polar bear on our sub-tropical hilltop, at the New Asia campus, which was part of a nature-themed sculpture exhibition during the summer of 2010.
<b>Et mirabilis in oculi nostril</b> ('and a miracle in our eyes'), an eco-friendly and seismic-proof school building was constructed as a CUHK School of Architecture initiative in Jiange County, Sichuan, within a fortnight, with participation of volunteers both local and from Hong Kong.
Lui Hoi-lam, an anthropology freshman, participated in the New Asia-Yale community service exchange programme in the summer of 2010 and spent a week in a homeless women shelter in the US, giving daycare services. She relishes her experience and misses the children under her care.

The School of Public Health and Primary Care was formed by regrouping existing programmes for both efficiency and effectiveness in teaching and research in the Medical Faculty. At its opening in November, the dancing lion greeted the director Prof. Sian Griffths (4th left) and other guests.
Nurses are trained to be brisk walkers, but few come close to her in terms of being light-footed. Miss Yu Kit-ching (2nd right), a Year 3 Nursing Student, won the woman's individual championship for the second year running in the Annual Cross Country Meet of the University Sports Federation of Hong Kong.
The 'International Poetry Nights' in November 2009 featured four days of literary events comprising academic activities as well as poetry recitals, organized by the Centre for East Asian Studies and with the participation of a truly multinational assemblage of poetic talents from around the world.

In October 2009,  21 students of Shaw College went to Cambodia to administer much needed help to impoverished communities there. At about the same time, the Head of College led another team of 20 students to Beichuan County and offered support and assistance in restoring the confidence and optimism of the residents.

Prof. Robert Mundell, Nobel Laureate in Economics 1999, is known throughout the world as the 'Father of the Euro'. He took up a Distinguished Professorship-at-Large in 2009. Prof. Mundell is also a man of many parts, and his interests extended from painting to the restoration of medieval castles.
You don't often hear senior members of the Government talking on issues of ethics and human behaviour. One such occasion occurred when Dr. the Honourable Henry Tang, Chief Secretary, was on campus and addressed the students of Shaw College in September 2009, on the subject of <b>The Art of Magnanimity</b>.

Orientation Camp 2009, a show of the creative might of the freshmen of the year. The initials of CU in Chinese characters were made up by formations of College representatives carrying colour-coded umbrellas in the University Mall.
CUHK oarsmen have grown so used to success that they really do not know how things could happen otherwise. In 2009, CUHK teams were the overall champion at the Jackie Chan Challenge Cup Hong Kong Universities Rowing Championship for the eighth consecutive year.
The Wu Zhiqiao project is now a major charitable undertaking among university students in Hong Kong. Since 2007, teams of students have built more than 15 bridges for people living in some of the most under-developed regions on the mainland.

Social Work students from CUHK were in Sichuan to help with spiritual and cultural reconstruction among secondary school students there in the wake of the traumatic experience.
Some of our students spent their summer in Calcutta caring for orphans, mentally handicapped children, the destitute, and the dying. They demonstrated to us the bright side of the human face, and also gained for themselves an experience that would not fade from memory for a long time.
